Breast Cancer Awareness Month: 3 Brands To Clean Up Your Beauty Routine

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and pink ribbons are everywhere.

While awareness campaigns have made great strides to drive awareness and research funding, there is still work to be done in prevention.  Studies increasingly link environmental exposures to cancer.

How can we really make an impact on breast cancer prevention this October?  Getting the toxins associated with cancers out of our daily beauty routine is one powerful step in prevention.  Cleaning up our beauty routine is easy with the 3 natural and luxurious brands below.

When the founders of Odacité, Suntegrity, and CV Skinlabs were personally affected by cancer, they each began looking at the chemicals in personal care products and set out to make a difference.

The result:  3 companies that are making it easy to choose natural, clean, toxin free beauty products that are luxurious and effective.

Odacité

In 2004 Valérie Grandury was diagnosed with breast cancer.  In order to heal, Valérie felt the necessity to detoxify her environment. She soon discovered that one of the most toxic elements in a women’s daily lives are personal care products. She soon realized that the very expensive French brand she slathered on her face with confidence every day was a cocktail of dangerous chemicals, some of which were known carcinogens!

Valérie decided to start making her own fresh skin care. The underlying motto she applied to food, “It all lies in the freshness of the raw ingredients,” would apply to her skin care.

She sourced the freshest, purest organic ingredients from all over the world and formulated her own age-defying blends. The secret to her magical ointments, then and now, is to use freshly made skin care in a window of time during which each ingredient retains its full freshness and efficiency. And so, the Freschiency Date was born.

The cremes made such a difference on her skin that she gave them as presents to her friends. It was an instant hit. Odacité was born to answer a growing demand for women who saw the difference that those blends made on their skin.

I first tried Odacité last through this great sample discovery kit.  The ingredients are clean and naturally powerful.  I fell in love with the textures!  The night cream is my favorite go-to nighttime moisturizer.

Suntegrity

Tricia Trimble founded Suntegrity in memory of her mom who lost her life to skin cancer.

After losing her mom to melanoma skin cancer, Tricia Trimble became a big advocate of wearing sunscreen. However, most of the sunscreens on the market use chemical UV blockers and contain a lot of toxic ingredients. It didn’t make sense to her to use these types of sunscreens to prevent skin cancer only to get another kind of cancer.

Using loss as a catalyst for change, Tricia created a holistic, mineral sun care line.

Suntegrity Face and Body SPF 30 products use non-nano size zinc oxide and non-toxic preservatives to maintain their integrity without sacrificing safety or health. They were awarded “Champion” Status by the EWG/Compact for Safe Cosmetics.

I use this sunscreen all sumer, and love the light texture and citrus-fresh smell.  I also love that it doesn’t contain retinol (vitamin A), which is suspected to speed the development of skin cancer when applied to skin and exposed to sunlight.  The body sunscreen is great in the summer, and the tinted BB cream is perfect for every-day protection.

CV Skinlabs

Britta Aragon, founder of CV Skinlabs, discovered her passion for promoting safe self-care through her experience as a caregiver during her father’s eight-year battle with cancer. A survivor of Hodgkin’s disease herself, she understands firsthand the devastating effects cancer and cancer treatments can have on the skin. When she tried products specifically targeted for “sensitive skin,” they were often laden with potentially harmful chemicals that actually irritated her father’s fragile skin. She became acutely aware of how devastating the side effects from drugs and medical treatments could be.  Inundated with queries for product recommendations and safer solutions, Britta decided who better than she—a former makeup artist and skincare therapist—to develop a line of safer products addressing sensitive skin? She assembled an expert team of leading dermatologists, toxicologists and holistic skincare chemists, and developed CV Skinlabs, a safe, non-toxic range of products to repair and restore radiance to sensitive and fragile skin—without harmful chemicals.

After trying the Body Repair Lotion I am completely hooked!  It’s super moisturizing and lasts all day.  A little goes a long way, so the bottle lasts longer than other body lotions.  The Restorative Skin Balm is a great product to have for just about anything: dry cuticles, chapped lips, irritated skin.  Great to have in your purse this winter.

  1. I can’t wait to check out these brands. I agree that your have to be careful with that you put on your skin. We absorb so much of it!

  2. Thank you for sharing this Liane.
I can sure use the reminder, cause it’s so easy to just pick a product, just cause you like its smell or colour. Everything from makeup to facial moisturiser might contain hazardous ingredients and we need to be conscious of our choices.

  3. I’m looking forward to checking out your suggestions. I’ve been using Beauty Counter products (also free from toxins) and love them. Thanks for your advice!

    • Ann, I have heard GREAT things about Beauty Counter… and their ingredients are very pure and toxin free. They are on my “to try” list! Thanks for reading, and enjoy trying some new clean brands!

  4. I’ve heard of Sungevity. I hadn’t heard of the other two. I’ll be looking into them. Thanks so much for the suggestions. I’m always on the look out for good products.
