Better Bath Bombs

Find a better bath bomb.

Who doesn’t love a warm, fizzy, scented bath?  Bath Bombs are a great treat, and perfect gift… but are they safe?

When you are soaking in a hot bath, the heat and steam causes the 3 trillion pores on your skin to open up.  The heat from the hot water also creates vapors that you inhale.  Top it off with the fact that a luxurious soak is probably longer than the average shower (at least it should be!) and you have the perfect recipe for maximum absorption of bath bomb ingredients.  So… let’s make sure they are free from any questionable or potentially harmful ones!

Here’s the break down of one popular bath bomb that you can find in many malls.

Lush So White Bath Bomb, 6 oz $6.45:

5 Ingredients to Avoid:

Lush Bath Bomb

Sodium Laureth Sulfate: SLES is likely contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane during the manufacturing process.  Both ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane are known carcinogens.  Ethylene oxide can also harm the nervous system and the California Environmental Protection Agency has classified it as a possible developmental toxicant.

Fragrance: When you see “fragrance” on a label, read it as “hidden chemicals.” A major loophole in FDA’s federal law allows manufacturers include nearly any ingredient in their products under the name “fragrance” without actually listing the chemical.  Independent testing has found high levels of phthalates hiding under the label fragrance.  Phthalates are potent hormone disruptors linked to pre-term births, reproductive system birth defects in boys, decreased sperm counts in men, reduced female fertility, and a worsening of allergy and asthma symptoms.

Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Lilial): EWG rates this a 7 (High Hazard) and it is banned in Europe due to its toxic and irritant properties (sources).

D&C Red No. 33:   Derived from coal tar, FD&C color pigments initiate skin sensitivity and irritation.  Worse, these chemicals are suspected carcinogens.

FD&C Red No. 4:  Same as above… synthetic color made from coal tar, containing heavy metal salts that deposit toxins onto the skin, causing skin sensitivity and irritation. Animal studies have shown almost all FD &C colors to be carcinogenic.

These are not ingredients I want soaking into my body and inhaled as vapors during a long, hot, steamy bath.  So, what can we do?
