The Best Natural Mascaras.  That Really Work!

Confession:  it took 2 years to completely clean up my beauty routine.  I replaced the majority of my makeup bag with natural products I loved, but I couldn’t give up my favorite (chemical filled) conventional mascara.

Natural mascaras are notorious for their underwhelming performance… flaking, smudging, and not enough volume.   But with new formulas and more natural brands manufacturing mascara, you can find a mascara you will love.  Maybe even more than your go-to (toxic) classic!

Below I will share the natural mascara that made it worth the switch for me.  Honestly, I love it even more than the conventional mascara I used for years!  I also found two more that are a close second and worth trying.

First, why switch to a natural mascara

Most conventional mascaras contain coal tar, petroleum and parabens… all associated with health concerns.

Specifically, we want to avoid the following ingredients: (pin this image to check mascara labels)

  • Parabens: endocrine disruptors that mimic estrogen Mascara Ingredients To Avoid_Live-Clear_Photo_Tall_Blog
  • Formaldehyde Releasing Preservatives: slowly releases formaldehyde, a known carcinoge
  • BHA & BHT: endocrine disruptor and possible carcinogen
  • Coal Tar Dyes: linked to cancer and heavy metal impurities
  • Aluminum Powder:  neurotoxin and possible carcinogen
  • Propylene Glycol: causes skin irritations and dermatitis
  • Fragrance & Perfume:  hidden ingredients often containing phthalates (endocrine disruptors and linked to cancer)

To make it on my favorites list, a mascara must meet the following criteria:

  1. Thicker, darker, longer lashes without clumps
  2. No smudging or flaking throughout the day.
  3. Come off easily – no smudging ands harsh rubbing to remove!
  4. Non-toxic ingredient list

And the winner is…

Kjaer Weis Mascara $38 (refills $26)

kw_mascara_wand_case_image Darker, thicker, longer lashes. No clumps.  One coat looks natural.  Several coats for more dramatic look.  Easy to apply. No smudging or flaking and lasts all day.  But… my favorite feature is how easily this comes off!  Gentle wiping with water and it’s gone.  If I take a shower without removing my make up first, this mascara just washes off.  In the summer I can jump in the pool anytime and it wipes of easily without any residual raccoon eyes.  Stays on all day, comes off easily at night.  Perfect!

This mascara is more expensive, but after the first purchase you can buy refills for $26. The refills slide easily into the original silver case.  It’s worth the splurge!  Plus, you don’t need eye makeup remover (water works just fine) so you can save the money on remover and use it to treat yourself to this mascara.

Runners Up:
Juice Beauty Lash Defining Mascara $19

Juice Beauty Mascara This is a great every-day mascara that gives a natural look.  No flaking or smudging, and comes off easily with gentle cleanser or makeup remover.

I am a huge fan of Juice Beauty products.  Their ingredients are clean, full of organic ingredients, and cruelty free.  I love their exfoliating cleanser so much that I wrote about it here:  The One Skincare Secret That Changed My Skin.

Physicians Formula Mascara Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Lash Boosting Mascara $10

This is a great drug store find!  The ingredients are clean, it goes on nicely and last all day.  Some smudging throughout the day, but smudges wiped away easily.

Many of us have tried to clean up our makeup bags, but continue to cheat with our mascara!  I am thrilled to have found Kjaer Weis and finally have a completely green make up routine.  Have you greened your mascara?  Tell me below in the comments about your experience.

  1. Thanks for the suggestions! I’ve switched to all natural paraben-free beauty products (lotion, wash, etc) but have struggled to find good natural make-up. Thanks for the advice!

  2. I tried the physicians formula one and to be honest I didn’t like it. Quite watery and it didn’t lift or lengthen my lashes at all. Smudges a lot throughout the day too which is no food. No one has time to keep checking and wiping away smudges.
I love natural alternatives but not sure there’s any natural mascara as good as my faves i.e Loreal or Lancome
