Start the year off with a beauty routine that is healthy, toxin free, and natural with these 15 simple tips.
1. Gentle exfoliation every morning
If you read The ONE Skincare Secret That Changed My Skin you know how critical this one step is to great skin. The secret is to exfoliate in the morning… not the evening. Your skin will repair during the day, and rebuild over night. Exfoliating in the morning remove impurities and dead skin cells causing your skin to repair throughout the day. At night, wash with a gentle cream cleanser. This will signal your skin to rebuild new cells overnight. Slough off old in the morning, repair through the day, rebuild over night. Repeat!
Here are 3 gentle daily exfoliating cleansers to choose from:
- Juice Beauty Exfoliating Cleanser ($22) Perfect for normal to dry skin.
- One Love Organics Brand New Day Scrub ($12) An oil-free option great for oily or acne prone skin. This scrub comes as a powder, and you add water for each application.
- Amala Rejuvenating Face Polish ($62) Whole plant ingredients gently sweep away dry, flaky skin.
2. Add an oil or serum to your daily routine
Oil: argan oil is “liquid gold” for your face. It’s full of vitamin E and
antioxidants, which are awesome for treating & preventing acne, anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, anti-inflammatory, and reduces under eye circles. It is also full of essential fatty acids that will keep your skin elastic, helping to preventing aging and wrinkles. Acure Argan Oil 100% Organic ($13) A beauty routine bargain!
Serums: the right serum can be the anti-aging super hero of your skincare routine. Serums are loaded with beneficial ingredients and even more
antioxidants than any other product in your routine. Tualique Youth Recovery Serum ($90) is my favorite because of the powerful blend of anti-aging ingredients. My skin feels tighter, brighter, and more radiant immediately, but I’ve discovered over time my skin looks and feels healthier and firmer.
3. Drink Green Smoothie
More powerful than any lotion or cream, green smoothies nourish our bodies from the inside out, resulting in gorgeous glowing skin. The nutrients in greens like spinach help improve acne, fight fine lines, wrinkles and dull skin. Regular consumption of fresh, organic spinach has been shown to improve skin health dramatically! Recipes for two of my favorite smoothies are here.
4. Use a natural body scrub once a week
Exfoliation is the secret to healing and preventing dry skin. Exfoliating helps the dead skin cells shed revealing the new skin cells underneath and allows moisturizer to penetrate. Try one of these body scrubs:
- Mountain Spirit Botanicals Coconut Body Polish ($56): This rich and creamy scrub is super moisturizing. Perfect for my dry skin and smells beautiful.
- Gilly’s Organics Hey Sugar, Lookin’ Good ($25): A great scrub in an oil base.
5. Apply Jojoba oil in shower
Lock in moisture by applying pure, 100% pure Jojoba oil after your shower while your skin is still wet, then pat dry. It’s dramatically moisturizing, long lasting, and less expensive than most body lotions. Dessert Essence brand is easy to find and USDA certified organic ($16)
6. Drink more of water
Water is a powerful beauty secret. You can spend hundreds of dollars on so-called miracle beauty products, and not get the same healthy glow as you will from staying well hydrated. But skip the plastic bottles – they can leach Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates. Filtered tap water in a steel or glass bottles is best. Chemicals like herbicides, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and chlorine are frequently found in our tap water, so invest in a water filter. A simple pitcher like Pur or Brita (around $20) is easy and effective. Read more about chemicals in our environment and what you can do to decrease exposure here: Read Mom Alert: 11 Common Chemicals Toxic to Developing Brains, 12 Simple Things You Can Do.
7. Drink lemon in warm water in the morning
Start every day with warm water and juice of 1/2 lemon for improved digestion, clearer skin, better hydration, and to help your body become more alkaline. You will see results in 2-3 weeks.
8. Drink rooibos tea
This wonder tea fights wrinkles and other signs of aging. Similar to the antioxidants found in green tea, rooibos tea has one hundred times the amount of the anti-aging substance Superoxide Dismutase (SOD). Rich in Zinc, rooibos regulates the body’s immune system and is also beneficial in healing skin irritations of all types, including eczema, acne, and sunburn. Rooibos also contains a potent antioxidant, Asphaltin flavonoid, that fights signs of aging. This tea is naturally caffeine free and has a pleasant, slightly sweet flavor.

9. Change your conventional lip balm for a natural version
Lip balm is something we apply and reapply many times over the course of a day. Many common lip balms contain several endocrine disruptors (parabens, BHT, and chemical sunscreens), coal tar dyes linked to cancer, artificial fragrance and flavor, and petroleum-derived oils that can lock all these questionable ingredients into the skin. Changing your lip balm is an easy way to eliminate unnecessary toxins in a product you use regularly. Read more here: What’s In Your Lip Balm? 6 Scary Ingredients to Avoid
10. Switch to natural mascara
It took me a long time to find a natural mascara worth the switch. Kjear Weis is THE one! Bonus: it wipes off easily with warm water (no more rubbing or expensive eye makeup remover) and you can buy just the brush/cartridge refill when you run out. Refills pop easily into the silver case. Read the full mascara review here.
11. Find the right face mask for your skin
A good face mask can transform your skin from good to great. Highly concentrated ingredients are left to penetrate while the mask sets. The key is to find one that best suits your skin. Apply a mask once a week.
- Dry, Sensitive or Normal Skin: Kahina Antioxidant Mask ($62)
- Oily or Combination Skin: One Love Organics Brand New Day ($13) Recommended above as a daily exfoliating cleanser also works as a mask.
- Oily or Blemished: Pai Copaiba Deep Cleanse AHA Mask ($60) Cooling and calming, this silky clay mask is ideal for combination or blemish-prone skin that is also prone to sensitivity.
12. Massage your scalp for gorgeous hair
Regular scalp massages you will increased blood flow to the area and stimulate the follicles in such a way that hair will grow faster. Try massaging your scalp for a few minutes every time you apply conditioner.
13. Use a daily moisturizer with sunscreen
Wrinkles, sun spots, and skin cancer… sunscreen is important. But make sure you are using a mineral based sunscreen free of Vitamin A (retinyl palmitate, retinol). Retinol is suspected to speed the development of skin cancer when applied to skin and exposed to sunlight. This is a favorite tinted moisturizer (goes on light, no smell, leave a dewy and even complexion): JuiceBeauty Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 ($29). Read more about sunscreen and the top 4 ingredients to avoid here.
14. BYOP (Bring Your Own Polish!)
Nail polish can’t be truly natural, but it can be free of the top 5 ingredients suspected to be harmful (5-free) and have less questionable ingredients overall. My favorite 5-free polish is Zoya. Read more polish reviews and what ingredients to avoid here.
